Elsie Dress Sewing Class

Elsie Dress Sewing Class - the perfect party dress | Sew Over It

Elsie is the ultimate party girl! Borne out of Lisa’s desire for a graceful, grown-up party dress, she is perfect for warm, balmy evenings in the sun, as well as those festive, wintery soirees. With a gently curved v-neckline, flattering princess seams and a nod to Lisa’s favourite fashions of the 50s, the Elsie Dress is elegant, sophisticated and will always catch an eye.

The perfect opportunity to show off those special fabrics, Elsie shines in beautiful brocades and jazzy jacquards. She’ll need something with structure that can hold its own shape, but the brighter and more special the better!

In this class you will learn how to make adjustments to the pattern for your body shape and preference, sew a princess-seamed bodice, construct box pleats, insert and invisible zip and attach an all-in-one facing. You will leave with your completed Elsie Dress and a pattern which has been altered to fit you.

Your sewing level

This class is aimed at advanced beginner sewers and above. You will need to have made a few garments before, and ideally be familiar with how to attach facings and insert an invisible zip. Please note, depending on your sewing speed you might leave with a little bit of hand sewing to finish at home.

Cake and tea will be provided to help the sewing process along!

Level: 5

  • Have made various basic garments to a good standard
  • Very familiar with sewing cotton, may have occasionally used drapey or stretchy fabrics
  • Can cut, pin and sew fabric accurately
  • Know how to place and pin patterns on fabric without guidance
  • Can insert an invisible zip and sew darts without guidance

Class length: Three 3 hour sessions

Materials required

Due to the width of the skirt, the Elsie Dress is not suitable for fabrics narrower than 140cm wide.

140cm wide:
Sizes 8/10                            3.3m
Sizes 12/14/16                     3.4m
Sizes 18/ 20                         3.5m

You will also need a 22″ invisible zip.

The Elsie Dress is perfect for medium to heavyweight fabrics with lots of structure; think lovely brocades and jacquards, heavier cotton sateen and soft furnishing fabrics. It’s important that the fabric has body and can hold its shape. Anything too drapey will make the dress look limp – not what you want! Find our specially-curated fabric picks on our online fabric shop.

Pattern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us a week before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
