Maxi skirt

Another staple item  for your wardrobe. Maxi skirts have been back in fashion for a while now so it’s about time we show you how to make one!

In this class you will make your own pattern to take away with you. We will give you a very basic introduction to pattern cutting. You will then learn how to sew a pocket, gather stitch and attached a waistband with an elasticated back.

This is one of our intermediate sewing classes and you will need some dressmaking experience. We will also be using overlockers in the class but you do not have to have any previous experience.

You will need 3m of soft drapey fabric. We will provide the elastic. See our online shop!

Jubilee embroidered tea towels

We couldn’t not do a special jubilee class so here it is! Learn how to embroider whilst making this memorable tea towel – it can be passed down from generation to generation!

In the class you will learn various hand embroidery stitches and how to follow a design.

We will provide the threads, tea towels and embroidery rings. As you will not finish the design in the class you will be able to take the rings and extra threads away with you to finish the design at home.

This class is suitable for complete beginners.

Cable knit cushion

Take your knitting a step further and make this gorgeous cable knit cushion with fabric back. Choose from a wide selection of chunky wools so your cushion is unique. Then choose a coordinating fabric use for the envelope back.

You will need to have knitted before and be able to knit and pearl, cast on and off. You will also need basic sewing machine skills. So if you need to brush up, try our Beginner’s knitting or our Button me cushion (for machine skills).

We have out two weeks in between the lessons as you will need to do some knitting at home. We will show you the technique and get you started in the first lesson, then in the second lesson we will be finishing off the knitting and stitching the cushion together.

We will provide you with all the wool, fabric and a cushion inner. We will also loan you some needles so you can do your homework.

Poppy cushion & lampshade

Learn how to make this stylish poppy cushion or lampshade using machine embroidery and applique.

The cushion is an envelope back cushion. We provide the pad so you can display your cushion the moment you get home. The lampshade comes as a kit. (Please note if you would like to make the lampshade it will be an extra £10 for the kit that you can pay on the day).

Choose from a selection of three plain background fabrics and hundreds of applique fabrics to make your design unique.

This is not a beginner machine embroidery class – you will need to have already been on our Mini class or have had a go at free machine embroidery already.

Placemats

Knicker making

Learn how to make your very own frilly knickers.

Choose from our range of pretty cotton lawn and Liberty tana lawn fabrics. You will use both sewing machines and overlockers to complete this project and take home a pattern so you can make as many as you like.

This is not a beginner’s class you will need to know how to use a sewing machine already (but not an overlocker). We will provide all the materials so all you need to bring is yourselves.

Make your own weekend bag, based on the classic Longchamp bag. The finished bag measures approx. 65 x 45cm. It is fully lined with an inside pocket and zip fastening.

Learn how to make your very own stylish leather purse. It is fully lined with an inside pocket and fastens with a mag lock and decorative covered button to match.

Men’s shirt course

 

Learn how to make a men’s shirt. Guys, make it for yourself or ladies, make your man a shirt and earn some brownie points!

We are using a Colette pattern for this class. Everyone will get their own pattern booklet to take away with them. Learn how to construct collars, button plackets, buttonholes, insert sleeves, add cuffs and more.

You will need 2.5m of shirting fabric – try to stick to non-slippy fabrics like cotton. We will provide you with interfacing.

This is an intermediate class, you will need previous experience of dressmaking to do this class.

To make it easier  for you to decide which classes are more suitable we have added levels. Please see below: 

Level 1: Absolute beginner

Level 2: Have used a sewing machine before, can thread it and sew in a straight line

Level 3: Confident on a sewing machine, can sew to different seam allowances, can zig zag stitch (have completed Intro to sewing)

Level 4: Have completed Intro to dressmaking or Intro to soft furnishings. Very confident sewing fabrics such as cotton.

Level 5: Have good dressmaking experience. Have made at least 2 completed garments such as a basic skirt and dress. Can cut and sew accurately.  Have basic understanding of garment construction

Level 6: Have lots of dressmaking experience. Can confidently sew curves and difficult fabrics. Have good understanding of fit and garment construction.

Make-up bag

Learn how to make this gorgeous fully lined make-up bag. It makes a great present – either for yourself or to give-away! You will learn how to insert a zip, line using slip stitch and more great sewing skills.

Machine embroidery

We have designed a range of mini classes to teach you some invaluable sewing skills. Intro to soft furnishings

We have designed a follow-on course especially for those of you who want to learn how to make items for your home. In this course you will learn how to make , a piped cushion with a concealed zips and machine curtains and blinds.

Session 1: Learn how to make and insert piping and then make a piped cushion to take away with you (materials included).

Session 2: Learn how to make a sample machine curtain (lining and header tape provided – you will need 1m of medium weight fabric which is 1.40m wide). Please note you will make a sample size curtain to take away with you measuring 1m in length.

Session 3 & 4: Learn how to make a sample machine made roman blind. (lining and materials included). Please bring 1m of fabric which is 1.40m wide). Please note you wil make a sample size bling to take away with you measuring 1m in length.

This is a follow-on course from Intro to sewing 1. If you have not taken this course you will need to be confident using and threading a sewing machine, know how to sew straight, have experience cutting and pinning fabric.

Pussy bow blouse dress

 

We have made a few tweaks to our pussy bow blouse and are now offering the dress version. Wear it as a tunic or belted as a dress on its own.

You will learn how to sew lightweight fabrics such as chiffon and georgette as well as more advanced construction techniques such as inserting sleeves, adding binding to the cuffs and attaching the neck tie. We will also be using the overlockers to finish the seams

You will need 2.5m of silk or similar fabric (chiffon/georgette/crepe de chine/sandwashed silk).

Ultimate shift dress

This is our second ultimate dress – it is such a versatile and staple item for your wardrobe. You can style it any way you like and you can make a top and tunic from the same pattern.We have also added a new twist – add a collar or a cap sleeve or just keep it plain and simple.

You will learn how to: cut out a dress pattern correctly, shorten the pattern, sew darts, finish seams using an overlocker or with zig zag stitch, sew curves.

You will need 2m of fabric. You can use any woven fabric for this dress (ideally lightweight cotton or wool crepe) but remember slippy fabrics are harder to sew! You will also need thread to match.

This is not a beginner’s dressmaking class but it is easier than the Ultimate wrap dress. You need to be a confident sewer and have experience of pinning and cutting fabric. Why not try our Intro to dressmaking class first to get your skills up to scratch?

Altering commercial patterns

If you have already done some dressmaking with us but now you want to learn how to go it alone then this is the class for you

We will show you how to make some basic alterations to commercial patterns so you can alter them to fit better. You will then all work on a pattern of your choice and get help making it.

In the first session you will learn how to alter your patterns. We will then ask you to cut them out at home and make a start on them and bring them back for the second session where we can help you with any tricky bits.

You will need to bring your own pattern and fabric and anything else the pattern requires. We recommend patterns that aren’t too complicated. You will get more from the course if your pattern is not too fussy.

Beginner’s Knitting

Intro to dressmaking

 

Intro to dressmaking

This is a great class for a beginner dressmaker. Learn about following a pattern, garment construction, finishing seams, inserting a zip and much more. Plus get a fab 50s style summer skirt to show off!

The pattern is included so you can make as many as you want. We thought you would like to choose your own fabric, so you will need 3m (it’s a full circle skirt so it takes a lot of fabric!). We recommend lightweight cotton as it is easy to sew and will hang well. You will also need a 9 inch regular zip to match your fabric.

This is a beginner’s dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine. If you’re a complete novice why not try one of our intro classes?

Ultimate wrap dress

The Ultimate Wrap Dress

This is the most versatile dress to wear. Based on the famous designer wrap (we can’t quote the name!) this dress will get you through all the seasons. It is so wearable – for work or play – it will become a staple item in your wardrobe.
In this class you will learn  dressmaking skills such as adding facings and inserting sleeves and how to sew jersey on a domestic sewing machine.

You will need 2.5 metres of jersey (140cm wide), if this is your first time sewing jersey then steer clear of anything overly stretchy. If you are unsure, just give us a call and we can advise you.

You will need to be confident on the sewing machine and had some experience of dressmaking. If you need some more practise why not come to Intro to dressmaking class or try our Ultimate shift dress?

Ultimate Leather Handbag

This gorgeous leather handbag will become your very own IT bag. Block colour handbags are very in this season, so why not make yours and own something unique!

Learn how to sew leather using a domestic sewing machine and the steps involved in bag construction.  From sewing pockets, lining and adding eyelets and maglocks. Intro to quilting paradise

Learn the techniques involved in log cabin patchwork quilting. We will show you how to design your patchwork, position your fabrics, sew it up and quilt it!

Everyone will get a chance to start their own project in the class and then we will make sure you know how to finish it at home or here in the sewing cafe. Please note you probably won’t be able to finish your projects in the class. You can choose how large or small you want your project to be. You can stay on in the sewing cafe and work on your project if you want after the lesson (free of charge!).

It is a good idea to come to this class having used a sewing machine before but if you are new to sewing we can get you going and help you along the way.

Please bring your own fabric to the class. We also have a box of remnants you can use. The quantity of fabric you need will depend on the size of your project. For a 1m x 1m quilt you will need approx 6 x 0.25m of fabric for patchwork, a further 0.5m for binding and 1m for the backing.

Mad Men dress: Betty

Mad Men dress in the style of Betty Draper

This course is for those of you who want to take your dressmaking skills to a higher level. We will show you how to alter the pattern and make a beautiful dress.You will learn how to sew darts properly, attach facings, insert a zip, hand finish and level a hem.

Session 1: Learn how to alter the pattern and cut out the dress.

Session 2: Learn how to sew darts, sew up bodice and skirt pieces and check the fit of the garment. You will also add the zip in this session

Session 3: Add the facings, finish and hem the dress

This is an intermediate dressmaking class so please don’t come along if you haven’t had any dressmaking experience. There may be a little homework in between classes, which you are welcome to do in the sewing cafe.

You will need 3.5m of lightweight cotton and a 22inch concealed zip.
