Brunch Dress From a Vintage Pattern

Some of you may remember this pattern I ordered from the States a month ago. They call it a brunch coat – a coat made for lazy Sundays, eggs and bacon???? It’s far too nice for that! I decided to make it in a drapey cotton I had on my shelf waiting to be chosen. I am quite pleased with the results although for the next time there are things I would change….

The collar and lapel is perfect. The size is right and not too costume-drama esque.

The sleeves however were not great – they made me look like I had wings that needed clipping. So I overlapped them and put a lovely vintage button to hold them down. Next time I will make them straighter and narrower to remove the funny points.

The tie works fine but I think a stiffer fabric belt would be a little less ‘brunch coat’ and a little more sophisticated day dress. So going to try that on my next version.

It has made me think this would be a great class/dress for maternity wear – it would be easy to wear the belt above the bump, extend the wrap to cover the bump and drop the front hem. What do you think pregnant ladies?

The end result! Please ignore my oversized beehive – I obviously felt short that day when getting ready.
