Vintage Dressmaking Patterns

If you haven’t noticed, I love vintage dressmaking patterns. I have collected quite a few sewing patterns over the years but still count my collection modest (I convince myself of this so I can buy more!)

I am prepared to pay more for a vintage sewing pattern than I would for a modern sewing pattern as like vintage clothes, there may be just one of them left!

When I buy them I often go up a couple of sizes, finding that a size 14 is more like a modern day size 10. So be warned! And as I do not own a Madonna-style pointy bra they can need some adjustments. I find the bust and waist darts are way to big and need reducing. I also often have to lengthen the bodices more than normal. I have to do this with modern sewing patterns as well but not as much. People were much shorter 50 years ago!

As much as I love vintage dressmaking patterns, they are harder to work with. There are a few that are in my pile that keep getting put back to the bottom as I can’t be bothered to work them out. With no markings and only holes and notches to guide you and sometimes no instruction booklet they are a challenge. But they are worth the challenge and I have been really inspired by some so much so that they have been a starting point for some of our classes.

Here are some of my favourites….

I love this coat! Planning it for Autumn…

I fell in love with the illustration of this one. The pattern is way too big for me so think I might just frame it…

Love this shirt dress. It’s at the top of my list. The skirt is way too long but that would be easy to change…

I imagine Betty Draper wearing this. Not too shabby for you Betty, not too shabby for me!

What do you think? Have you ever used a vintage pattern? I’d love to hear about it.
