We’re doing something new on the blog over the next few weeks. We’re hosting our very first sewalong! We’re going to be sewing the 1940’s Tea Dress, so if you’ve seen the pattern and have been itching to sew one for yourself, now could be the perfect time.
So, what’s a sewalong? It’s a bit like a Sew Over It class, but instead of us all sewing together in the same room, we’ll all be sewing together at home. Instead of the class teacher, we will be posting step-by-step instructions online for you to follow along with. And instead of finishing the dress in a couple of three hour classes, we will be sewing at a nice and relaxed pace over a few weeks. (The only downside is that you will have to bring your own cake!)
By the beginning of March you could all be swishing around in a beautiful new handmade tea dress, all ready for those spring parties you’ve got lined up. And of course even if you’re not following along with us this time, these posts will stay up on the blog for reference in case you’d like help sewing the dress in the future.
The 1940’s tea dress is a level 6 pattern, which puts it in intermediate territory. Ideally you will already have a couple of dressmaking projects under your belt, as well as some experience working with finer fabrics. If not, but you’re feeling brave anyway, go for it! (But save that expensive silk until you’re definitely confident.)
We will be answering questions all the way through the sewalong process so if you get stuck, we’ll be on hand to help. Tweet us at @SewOverIt or use the hashtag #SOIsewalong, or leave us a comment on our Facebook page.
Next Tuesday we will be talking you through choosing fabric and gathering your supplies.
The whole schedule looks like this:
4th Feb – Choosing fabric & gathering supplies
14th Feb – Measuring yourself, choosing your size, tracing the pattern and cutting the fabric
18th Feb – The sewing begins! Sewing the bodice
21st Feb – Sewing the skirt
24th Feb – Sleeves
28th Feb – Inserting the zip
4th March – Attaching the neckline facing and sewing on the buttons
7th March – Hemming
18th March – Showcasing your finished tea dresses!
You can get the pattern here from our website, or if you’re local to our shops, you can come and pick up a copy from us there.
We’d love to see what you’re all up to!
And finally, if you’re the blogging type, we’ve made a little badge that you can display on your blog to show you’re taking part. Get the code:
