The Alex Shirt is versatile, classic, and effortlessly elegant shirt with two variations: wear it as a top or lengthen it into a dress, the choice is yours! Designed as part of our City Break Capsule Wardrobe, the Alex Shirt is the perfect thing for strolling around your favourite city – but is equally at home at home! Created to be loose-fitting and comfortable, it can be worn loose or nipped in with a belt at the waist.
If you have never made a shirt before, the Alex Shirt is the ideal place to start. With a flat collar, yoke, centre front button stand and 3/4 length rolled up sleeves with a tab fastening there are loads of new techniques to learn. The dress option has a flattering dipped hem, but you can choose to make it level to suit your preference.
The Alex Shirt can be made in a multitude of different fabrics, from cotton and linen to rayon and even silk. We recommend sticking to a stable woven fabric such as cotton or linen if you’re less experienced, but a confident sewer could tackle those trickier fabrics. Lisa’s dress version above is made in a beautiful Liberty silk and makes for a perfectly effortless evening outfit, whereas in linen or cotton it’s perfect for the daytime.
On the class you will get to try on a toile to determine your size before cutting out and altering both the pattern and garment to fit as necessary. At the end of the class you will have both a garment that fits and a pattern to take away with you so you can make as many as you like!
Please note this is not a beginner’s dressmaking class – you will need to have made a couple of garments before. Why not start with our Ultimate Shift Dress?
Tea and treats will be provided to help the sewing process along!

Lightweight woven fabric with some drape like cotton lawn or voile. If you’re feeling adventurous you could try rayon, crepe, georgette or even silk!
If you are less experienced we recommend you use a cotton. We have found that you will get more out of the class if you are not struggling with a difficult fabric for the first time.
