We love nothing more than introducing people to the wonderful world of sewing and since we opened six years ago we have taught over 6000 beginners how to sew. Our bestselling beginner sewing class, Intro to Sewing is the perfect introduction!
Our newly-updated Intro to Sewing course is the ultimate beginner sewing class. Even if you have never seen a sewing machine before, this course will give you the confidence to work on a whole variety of sewing projects. We will start from scratch, showing you how to thread the sewing machine, before building your skills with our three tailor-made projects. By the end of the course you will have even made your first steps into dressmaking with a super cute pair pyjama shorts. Here is how Intro to Sewing is broken down:
Session 1: Make a cushion cover! We start off gently by getting you familiar with the sewing machine. Learn how to thread your machine and sew in a straight line, before making a cushion cover. Decorate your cushion with self-covered buttons.
Session 2: Make a canvas toiletry bag! We’ll walk you through putting in a zip and once you’re ready you’ll whip up a zipped toiletry bag, learning how to finish the seams with zig zag stitch as you go.
Sessions 3 & 4: In the last two sessions of Intro to Sewing you’ll make your first foray into dressmaking with a perfect pair of pyjama shorts. You’ll learn the basics of cutting out a clothing pattern and sewing up the shorts, as well as constructing a waistband, hemming and inserting elastic.
Included in the price of the course:
A choice of a wide selection of fabrics for the cushion cover & toiletry bag, a cushion pad for your cushion, a zip for your toiletries bag, ribbon & elastic for your pyjama shorts, a guide to threading a sewing machine and lots of tea and treats!
You will need to bring:
Some fabric for your pyjama shorts! Depending on what size clothes you wear and how wide your chosen fabric is, you will need different amounts of fabric. Use the table below to determine how much you need to bring with you:
115cm wide fabric 140cm wide fabric
XS-M 1.2m 1.0m
L-XL 1.7m 1.3m
Pattern sizes: You can find a post on our size chart and how to measure yourself here. If you are outside or may be bordering on our range of sizes, please contact us two weeks before the class as we may need to grade the pattern for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
We strongly recommend a medium weight cotton so that you can focus on learning some new sewing skills, not dealing with a fiddly fabric! You can choose something from our shop on the day or perhaps peruse our online shop for some inspiration.
VIDEO SUPPORT! We offer video support for Intro to Sewing! We know it can be tricky to remember everything you learn in the class, so to help you we’ve made a series of video tutorials to refresh your memory. Once the course is complete, we will email you a link to a series of downloadable tutorials made by Lisa. And there are extras projects on there too! Click here for a preview!
