Cocoon Coat class

Cocoon Coat sewing class at Sew Over It in London

Take your dressmaking skills up a notch and sew yourself a beautiful winter coat in our brand new class! On-trend and easy to wear, the Cocoon Coat is a winter wardrobe staple. Inspired by one of Lisa’s own coats, it’s stylish, versatile and cosy over your cool-weather layers.

The Cocoon Coat features a shaped collar stand, drop shoulder, welt pockets and a full lining. There are no fastenings but the coat wraps closed at the front. The gently oversized look and comfy fit mean you’ll be reaching for it all season. You’ll learn how to construct a coat whilst picking up lots of new skills and tailoring techniques from our expert teachers.

As with all our intermediate and advanced classes you will alter the pattern and coat as you go to ensure a good fit.

Your sewing level

This is a fairly advanced dressmaking class. Please do not book onto the course unless you are an intermediate dressmaker and have completed lots of items. You will need to be able to sew accurately and at a good speed.

Tea and cake will be provided to help the sewing process along!

Level: 6

  • A confident dressmaker
  • Can attach a sleeve
  • Has sewn with difficult fabrics
  • Has a good understanding of clothing construction
  • Has an idea of fitting and altering a pattern
  • Can sew unaided at a good pace – e.g. could make our Ultimate Shift Dress (if already cut out) in 3 hours
  • Can carry out all skills mentioned in previous levels

Materials required:

For your Cocoon Coat you will need:

150cm wide
Main cloth:            2.2m
Lining:                   1.8m

The Cocoon Coat can be made in a lot of different fabrics but you will want to choose something that isn’t too rigid. Pattern matching will require more fabric and will be time consuming in the class, meaning you may fall behind schedule. We recommend you pattern match in your second version of the coat and use a fabric that doesn’t require matching in the class. You can find our fave Cocoon Coat choices in our online shop.

Patttern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us two weeks before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
