Would you love to learn how to make your own clothes but don’t know where to start? On this intensive four week beginners dressmaking course you will learn how to make two garments from start to finish, and leave with the knowledge of how to work from a pattern to create your own clothes. All our teachers who run this course are expert dressmakers and will pass on all their best tips and tricks.
On your first two evenings make yourself our new favourite: the Ava Skirt!
With our new Ava Skirt pattern, you’ll be whipping up a mini or just below the knee A-line style skirt in no time! Learn how to measure yourself, how to cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, as well as how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with a zigzag stitch. Then we’ll teach you how to attach a waistband, how to sew a hem and how to sew on poppers or a hook and eye to close the skirt.
Over the next two evenings make yourself a versatile, 60s-inspired Ultimate Shift Dress!
You will learn to alter your pattern before cutting it out and how to accurately cut your fabric. Learn how to sew darts to create shape in a garment, before you sew up the side seams and attach an all-in-one armhole and neckline facing. Hem your dress and sew on a hook and eye to close the dress at the back.
Please note: in this class there isn’t time to complete the sleeved version of the Ultimate Shift Dress, you will however go home with a pattern for sleeves and full instructions on how to insert them (after a little more practise!).
Your sewing level:
This is a beginners dressmaking course so no experience of dressmaking is required but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine. We will expect you to be have taken the Intro to Sewing course or be at an equivalent standard.
Tea and treats are provided to help the sewing process along!
We now offer video support for the first project of your Dressmaking Evening class! We know it can be tricky to remember everything you learn in the class, so to help you keep on top of everything you’ve learned we’ve made a series of tutorials to refresh your memory. Once the course is complete we will email you a link to a series of downloadable tutorials made by Lisa herself. So if you have trouble remembering how to insert the zip or get a bit stuck with the waistband, never fear, we’ve got it covered. And there are extras too!
- Can thread a sewing machine
- Can sew to different seam allowances
- Understands about backstitching at the start & end of seams
- Have made a range of sewn items equivalent to those made on our Intro to Sewing class
- If you have completed our Intro to Sewing class, you are level 3
Class length: Four 3 hour sessions
We recommend a medium weight cotton as it is easy to sew and will hang well, have a look here for some inspiration! We don’t recommend choosing anything too lightweight, or stretchy as they might make things trickier when you are sewing up your skirt. You will also need a 8/9 inch regular zip.
Ultimate Shift Dress

Head to our online shop and see what fabrics you take your eye! Remember, medium weight cottons are always a good choice if this is your first dress!
Pattern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us two weeks before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
