I’m coming to a class. (Yay!) Where are you based and how do I get there?
Our address is 319 Essex Road, London, N1 2BD. Sew Over It Islington is located near the top of Essex Road, opposite Trade Cafe.
Victoria Line: We are just under 20 minutes from Highbury and Islington
Northern Line: Angel Station is a ten minute bus ride from the shop
Overground: We are close to both Canonbury, Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland stations
National Rail lines: We are a 6 minute walk from Essex Road station
We are served by the 38, 56, 73, 76, 341 and 476 buses.
I want to learn to sew, where do I start?
The best bet for a complete beginner is our Intro to Sewing class. Designed for those who’ve never seen a sewing machine before or anyone who needs a refresher from their school days, this is the perfect introduction to sewing.
I can already sew, but I want to start making my own clothes. What’s the best option for me?
Intro to Dressmaking is our beginner dressmaking course for people who can use a sewing machine but want to start making clothes. In this class you’ll make a full circle skirt that fits you. We’ll teach you how to measure yourself properly, how to use a pattern, interting a zip and interfacing and attaching a waistband – and lots more!
What level am I?
How do I book a place on a class?
You can see our classes either on our classes page. Once you have selected a class you wish to book, click ‘Book Now’ next to the date of your choice, and you will be taken to a registration page where you can fill in your details and pay using our secure Worldpay platform.
I’m size 18 or above and I want to book a course. Why do I have to email in advance?
Don’t worry, this is nothing scary. Sew Over It patterns are graded up to a size 20, so we ask that anyone above this size emails us before the class so we have chance to make a pattern for you. (We’ve included size 18 in this as well because our patterns sizes are not exactly the same as ‘shop’ sizes. You can read more about our sizing and how to take your measurements here) This saves us having to do it in the class, and means everything can run smoothly on the day.
Similarly, if you are a UK size 6 or below you will need to email us as well as we’ll need a grade the pattern down for you.
How many people will there be in my class?
The maximum number of people in any class is 11. Although for the more tricky classes, particularly the dressmaking and leather classes, there will only be 6-8 people so we can give everyone lots of attention.
Do I need to bring my own machine?
No, we provide all the sewing machines. We use Janome CXL-301 machines here, which are computerised and great for all levels. If you want to bring your own machine so that you can get to grips with it however, you’re very welcome to. You can also buy the machines we use on our online shop.
Something has come up and I can’t make the class. What do I do?
Unfortunately due to the limited availability we cannot guarantee refunds or re-bookings if you cannot make the class. You have a 7 day cancellation period after booking when you can ask for a refund (please note this doesn’t include cancellations made 7 days or less prior to the class date). If you cannot make a date what we can offer is a place on our waiting list for classes with spaces – if a class isn’t fully booked then we can offer you a place.
I’m coming to a class but I’m running late. Help!
If you are running late to a class just give us a call so we can inform the teacher. If you’re going to be more than 30 minutes late this is likely to be very disruptive to everybody else and unfortunately you won’t be able to join the class.
I want to buy a gift voucher for someone. Do you offer them?
We do do gift vouchers! These can be bought here, and can be used to pay for or towards all of our classes, our online fabric shop, as well as things from our shops in Clapham North and Islington.
Can children come to the classes?
Unfortunately not, as our insurance doesn’t cover children in the classes. You must be at least 16 and if you’re 16 or 17 you will need written consent from a parent or guardian. Children aged 7 and over may come to a 121 private lesson as long as there is a paying adult present.
I would like to learn how to…?
If you really want to learn something but we don’t offer it at the moment then let us know. If there are enough people who want to do it then we can put a class on.
