Our first tailored jacket class, the Francine Jacket was inspired by a gorgeous vintage suit one of our lovely customers was wearing. Originally utterly 1940s in style, we tweaked the design to bring it up to date and voila, the Francine Jacket was born! A wardrobe staple, made out of a suiting worsted wool it’s perfect to wear to work with your Ultimate Pencil Skirt or Ultimate Trousers. Made in a heavier wool it’s warm enough to wear as a short coat. The style gives a subtle nod to the 40s but has been modernised in design and fit. With clever darts and shaping, this jacket can be tailored to fit your figure.
You will learn how to interface a jacket, add a lining, insert jacket sleeves as well as several tailoring techniques. And like all our classes, you will leave with a pattern and garment which fits you.
There will be homework in between the sessions so that we can concentrate on the difficult bits in class. It will be important that you have time to do the homework so that you can ensure your jacket is finished at the end of the class. (Expect to do approximately four hours each week.)
This class is aimed at those of you with intermediate to advanced dressmaking experience who have previously completed several dressmaking projects, as it requires accurate and quick sewing. You will be expected to have experience in sleeve insertion as well as be able to sew accurate curves and darts, but no previous jacket making is required.
Tea and treats will be provided to help the sewing process along!
- Can carry out all dressmaking skills mentioned in previous levels to a high level
- Can sew and cut trickier fabrics independently and at a good pace
- Some experience in fitting and pattern alterations
- Want to learn more complicated construction skills such as working with lace, and tailoring

Fabrics with a high wool content will be easier to tailor and give you the best results. Think tweed or medium weight coating fabrics. We have the perfect fabric for this available on our online fabric shop!
The jacket also needs 1m of interfacing, 3 buttons and a pair of shoulder pads which can also be purchased in the shop.
Pattern sizes: You can find a post on our size chart and how to measure yourself here. Unfortunately if you are outside our range of sizing we will be unable to accommodate you on the course. This is due to the way the pattern is graded and is sadly something we’re unable to change.
