Intro to Knit Fabrics: Heather Dress

Heather Dress class from Sew Over It - a flattering knit dress with unusual panels and in-seam pockets

Learn to sew knit fabric on a regular sewing machine with our Intro to Knit Fabric class. If you’ve never sewn with jersey before let us show you the ropes – and help banish its bad reputation as a difficult fabric to work with. It’s not… as long as you know a few secrets!

Versatile and super comfy, the Heather Dress is sure to be a wardrobe staple. Gorgeously chic for a jersey dress, Heather can be smart as well as casual and will keep you looking fab at home, at work, or for dinner out. It has practical in-seam pockets (always a winner!) and with opportunities for colour blocking you can really make this dress your own. There are three sleeve options to suit the seasons – choose from a short capped sleeve, 3/4 length or full length.

Learn how to construct a dress in knit fabric, and get to grips with princess seams, inserting pockets into a seam, sewing sleeves and binding a neckline. There’s so much to learn, and you’re in good hands with our expert teachers!

Leave with a beautiful Heather Dress that you’ll be proud to say you made yourself!

Cake and tea are provided to help the sewing process along!

Class length: Two 3 hours sessions

Pattern sizes: You can find a post on our size chart and how to measure yourself here. If you are outside or may be bordering on our range of sizes, please contact us two weeks before the class as we will need to grade the pattern for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.

Materials required:

Colour Blocked Dress
Centre panels – 1m(140cm wide fabric) all sizes
Short sleeve and side panels: 1.3m (140cm wide fabric) all sizes
Longer sleeves and side panels: 1.5m (140cm wide fabric) all sizes

Solid Colour Dress
Short sleeve – 2.3m (140cm wide fabric) all sizes
Longer sleeves – 2.5m (140cm wide fabric) all sizes

You will find that most jerseys come in widths of 140cm and above, which is why we haven’t calculated for narrower fabrics. You will need a longer length of fabric if you are using a narrower width.

Fabric suggestions: we recommend a medium weight knit fabric with low stretch, such as a ponte di roma or double knit jersey. We have the perfect fabric on our online shop.
