NEW! Intro to Dressmaking #1: Ava Skirt

Intro to Dressmaking - beginners sewing class at Sew Over It

The time has come to give our bestselling Intro to Dressmaking class a bit of a makeover – with a brand new pattern! Welcome the Ava Skirt to the Sew Over It pattern gang! Our new Ava Skirt pattern is a versatile A-line style beginners’ pattern with two different length options. Wear it long with boots for the ultimate in cosiness, or sew up the shorter version for the perfect work to evening skirt. It’s an everyday classic that’ll go with everything and work throughout the seasons – win-win!

In our Intro to Dressmaking class you will sew up our new Ava Skirt pattern whilst learning a whole host of skills on the way. We will show you how to work from a pattern, sew darts, insert a zip, attach a waistband and sew your very first skirt. All our teachers who run this course are expert dressmakers and will pass on all their best tips and tricks.  You will leave with a finished skirt and a pattern to take away with you.

The course is broken down into two sessions:

Session one: learn how to measure yourself, fitting yourself with toiles, how to cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to stitch darts, insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with zig zag stitches.

Session two: learn how to attach a waistband, how to hem and how to sew on poppers.

This is a beginners dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine. We will expect you to be have taken the Intro to Sewing course or be at an equivalent standard.

We have the perfect fabric available from our online shop.

Tea and treats are provided to help the sewing process along!

Post-class support:
We offer video support for Intro to Dressmaking! We know it can be tricky to remember everything you learn in the class, so to help you keep on top of everything you’ve learned we’ve made a series of tutorials to refresh your memory. Once the course is complete we will email you a link to a series of downloadable tutorials made by Lisa herself. So if you have trouble remembering how to insert the zip or get a bit stuck with the waistband, never fear, we’ve got it covered. And there are extras too!

We definitely recommend a medium weight cotton as it is easy to sew and will hang well – have a look here for some inspiration! We don’t recommend choosing anything too lightweight, or stretchy as it will make things trickier when you are sewing up your skirt. Cotton lawns and rayons should be avoided. You will also need a 8/9 inch regular zip. Once you’ve made your first version, the Ava Skirt will also sew up beautifully in brocades, wools and denims – anything with a bit of structure!

Pattern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us two weeks before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
