Would you love to learn how to make your own clothes but don’t know where to start? This beginners dressmaking class is for you! We will show you how to work from and pattern, insert a zip, attach a waistband and sew your very first skirt. All our teachers who run this course are expert dressmakers and will pass on all their best tips and tricks. You will leave with a finished skirt and a pattern to take away with you.
This is how the course is broken down into the two sessions:
Session one: learn how to measure yourself, how to cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with zig zag stitches.
Session two: learn how to attach a waistband, how to hem a curved hem and how to sew on poppers.
This is a beginners dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine. We will expect you to be have taken the Intro to Sewing course or be at an equivalent standard.
We have the perfect fabric available from our online shop.
Tea and cake are provided to help the sewing process along!
NEW! We now offer video support for Intro to Dressmaking! We know it can be tricky to remember everything you learn in the class, so to help you keep on top of everything you’ve learned we’ve made a series of tutorials to refresh your memory. Once the course is complete we will email you a link to a series of downloadable tutorials made by Lisa herself. So if you have trouble remembering how to insert the zip or get a bit stuck with the waistband, never fear, we’ve got it covered. And there are extras too! Click here for a preview!

Class length: Two 3 hour sessions
115cm wide fabric: 3m
140cm wide fabric: 2m
** Please note that for the full circle skirt, because parts of it is on the bias, a non-directional print is preferable. If you use a directional print, you will end up with some of the design on its side.
We recommend a medium weight cotton as it is easy to sew and will hang well, have a look here for some inspiration! We don’t recommend choosing anything too lightweight, or stretchy as they might make things trickier when you are sewing up your skirt. You will also need a 8/9 inch regular zip.
Pattern sizes: 6-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us a week before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
Max in class: 8
Price: £99 (Intro to Dressmaking)
