Intro to Sewing Shirts

Learn to sew a great fitting shirt in our Intro to Sewing Shirts class!

On this course you will learn the fundamentals of shirt construction, including how to sew a collar and collar stand, cuffs, buttonholes and optional flat felled seams. You will leave with a beautiful shirt, all made under the guidance of our most experienced dressmaking teachers. You have the choice of making either a classic women’s shirt – the Ultimate Shirt – or our new Hackney Shirt for men.

Ultimate Shirt
The Ultimate Shirt really is the ultimate in classic women’s shirts. A timeless wardrobe staple, it features a dartless bodice, collar and collar stand, back yoke with inverted box pleat, bound cuff placket with traditional shirt cuffs, grown-on button stands and a gently curved hem. Easy to wear tucked-in or loose, and with a gentle, flattering fit, it’s a great all-occasions shirt. Pair with a pencil skirt for a chic work look, or wear untucked with a pair of Ultimate Trousers to channel a bit of Audrey Hepburn.

Hackney Shirt
The Hackney Shirt is our brand new men’s shirt. A classic design, it features a collar with collar stand, back yoke with box pleat, traditional shirt cuffs with a tower placket, flat felled seams, grown-on button stands, slightly curved hem and patch chest pocket. Contemporary and cool, it’s slim-fitting yet comfy, and because the collar can be worn both open and with a tie, it works for everyday casual as well as keeping you smart at the office.

Your sewing level

Shirts are pretty tricky which is why we have labelled this as an advanced dressmaking class. It is not suitable for those with no/little dressmaking experience. You’ll need to be able to sew at a good speed and have had experience of sewing darts and inserting a sleeve. There might be a little bit of homework to do between the classes, especially if you are making the shirt for someone at home, rather than for yourself!

Tea and treats are provided to help the sewing process along!
