If you want to fast track your sewing journey (and save a little money for more fabric!) we are now offering a ‘Learn to Sew’ class bundle. Book the Learn to Sew bundle and you can do our best-selling Intro to Sewing and Intro to Dressmaking classes all in one go and be well on your way to creating your own bespoke wardrobe.
Tailored to absolute beginners, even if you have never seen a sewing machine before, Intro to Sewing will give you the confidence to work on a whole variety of sewing projects. We will start from scratch, showing you how to thread the sewing machine, before building your skills with our three tailor-made projects: a Button Me Cushion Cover, a Zipped Toiletries Bag and your very own Ultimate Pyjama Shorts.
Once you’ve finished Intro to Sewing, you’ll dive straight into our Intro to Dressmaking class where you’ll learn how to work from a pattern and sew your very first skirt. All our teachers who run this course are expert dressmakers and will pass on all their best tips and tricks. You will leave with a finished skirt and a pattern to take away with you.
VIDEOS! We offer video support for Intro to Sewing and Intro to Dressmaking! We know it can be tricky to remember everything you learn in the class, so to help you we’ve made a series of video tutorials to refresh your memory. Once the course is complete, we will email you a link to a series of downloadable tutorials made by Lisa. And there are extras projects on there too! Click here for a preview!
You can book the bundle at the bottom of the page, or read through to get a bit more detail…
Intro to Sewing
Session 1: Make a cushion cover! We start off gently by getting you familiar with the sewing machine. Learn how to thread your machine and sew in a straight line, before making a cushion cover. Decorate your cushion with self-covered buttons.
Session 2: Make a canvas toiletry bag! We’ll walk you through putting in a zip and once you’re ready you’ll whip up a zipped toiletry bag, learning how to finish the seams with zig zag stitch as you go.
Sessions 3 & 4: In the last two sessions of Intro to Sewing you’ll make your first foray into dressmaking with some super cosy pyjama shorts. You’ll learn the basics of cutting out a clothing pattern and sewing up the shorts, as well as constructing a waistband, hemming and inserting elastic.
Intro to Dressmaking #1: Full Circle Skirt
Session 1: learn how to measure yourself, how to cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with zig zag stitches.
Session 2: learn how to attach a waistband, how to hem a curved hem and how to sew on poppers.
Included in the price of the course:
A choice of a wide selection of fabrics for the cushion cover & toiletry bag, a cushion pad for your cushion, a zip for your toiletries bag, ribbon & elastic for your pyjama shorts, a guide to threading a sewing machine and as much tea and cake as you can eat!
You will need to bring:
Some fabric for your Ultimate Pyjama Shorts! Depending on what size clothes you wear and how wide your chosen fabric is, you will need different amounts of fabric. Use the table below to determine how much you need to bring with you:
115cm wide fabric 140cm wide fabric
XS-M 1.2m 1.0m
L-XL 1.7m 1.3m
You will also need some fabric and an 8” standard zip for your Full Circle Skirt:
115cm wide fabric 140cm wide fabric
8-20 3.0m 2.0m
Please note that for the full circle skirt, because parts of it are on the bias, a non-directional print is preferable. If you use a directional print, you will end up with some of the design on its side. This is not necessarily a bad thing but please keep it in mind!
For both the Ultimate Pyjama Shorts and Full Circle Skirt we strongly recommend using medium weight cotton. Anything too lightweight or with any stretch in will make it tricky to handle!
Pattern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please give us an email at [email protected] with your waist and hip measurement, as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
