Learn to sew knit fabric on a regular sewing machine with our Intro to Knit Fabric class. If you’ve never sewn with jersey before let us show you the ropes – and help banish its bad reputation as a difficult fabric to work with. It’s not… as long as you know a few secrets!
In the Intro to Knit Fabrics class learn to make our versatile Emma Dress, exclusive to our online and London classes! The Emma Dress is your perfect everyday jersey dress. It features a flattering princess-seamed bodice and a pretty pleated skirt with two hem options. The sleeves are a classic 3/4 length and the dress closes with an invisible zip in the centre back seam.
Designed to be sewn in a stable, heavier-weight jersey such as ponte, with Emma you’ll learn the absolute basics of sewing with knit fabrics, as well as some surprise extras – such as inserting a zip into a stretch fabric!
In this class you will learn vital dressmaking skills for sewing with jersey and knit fabrics on a domestic sewing machine. We’ll show you the best way to cut out your fabric to prevent it from stretching out of shape, and we’ll teach you the best tools and machine needles to use when sewing with knits. You will learn how to stabilise seams, attach facings and insert sleeves, and you’ll leave with a beautiful dress!
Your sewing level
Cake and tea are provided to help the sewing process along!
- Have made various basic garments to a good standard
- Very familiar with sewing cotton, may have occasionally used drapey or stretchy fabrics
- Can cut, pin and sew fabric accurately
- Know how to place and pin patterns on fabric without guidance
- Can insert an invisible zip and sew darts without guidance
Class length: Two 3 hours sessions
Materials required: You want to steer clear of anything too lightweight as this will not hold the shape of the Emma Dress. If you use a lighter weight fabric then the look of the Emma Dress will differ from the pictures and the fabric will be trickier to work with, we don’t recommend using anything lighter than Ponte di Roma. The fabric requirements for different sizes are listed below.
