Chic, classic and wearable whether you’re at the shops or a wedding, the Kitty Dress is a button-down shirt dress with a huge variety of options. (Last time we counted there were ten!) With a vintage nod, all versions are feminine, fitted through the waist and oh so flattering.

Versions 2 and 4 feature a darted bodice with set-in sleeves and choice of beautiful shawl collar or notched collar. The darted bodice is finished neatly at the front with facings.

Versions 1 and 3 are fitted with princess seams and feature a sleeveless bodice with scooped shoulders. Choose between the shawl collar or notched collar, and between finishing the bodice with facings or a lining.

You can pair all bodices with a choice of panelled skirt (skirt 1) or gathered skirt (skirt 2), with both options featuring in-seam pockets. All versions are cinched in at the waist with a narrow waistband. And you can also make the skirt on its own!

Versatile, classic and just a little bit fun, Kitty makes a beautiful addition to any handmade wardrobe!

Sewing Level
The Kitty Dress is an intermediate level sewing pattern. We recommend you make a toile of the bodice in an inexpensive fabric to check the fit and make any adjustments before cutting into your selected fabric.

Fabric Suggestions

For the different versions of the Kitty Dress we recommend different fabrics, and this mostly comes down to the skirt. For all versions you’re looking for a lightweight woven fabric. For the gathered skirt we recommend light to medium weight cotton fabrics such as lawn, poplin, seersucker, double gauze and quilting cottons. These will create a full skirt, perfect for adding a vintage touch. For the panelled skirt (or a floatier gathered skirt) choose something lightweight with a good drape, such as crepe, viscose, rayon and cotton voile. This will result in a less full skirt with a great swish-factor! Linen and linen blends could be suitable for all versions depending on the weight and drape.

You will also need 11-12 buttons and a lightweight fusible interfacing.

Fabric Requirements
The Kitty Dress PDF sewing pattern is sized between UK sizes 8-20. See the chart for details on fabric requirements.

Like all our patterns, the sizes are nested to make it easier to grade between the sizes, depending on your measurements.

What will I receive?
The downloadable pattern file contains:

  • printable pattern (in both tiled print-at-home and copyshop format)
  • fully-photographed printable instruction booklet
  • imperial/metric conversion size chart
  • copyshop permission letter

Because there are so many variations, the Kitty Dress PDF sewing pattern is separated into individual PDF A4 and US letter files for each bodice and skirt option, meaning you don’t have to print everything at home. The bodice PDF files are 17 pages long, skirt 1 (the panelled skirt) is 34 pages long and skirt 2 (the gathered skirt) is 27 pages long. In total there are 8 copyshop pages.

If you purchase the PDF Pattern + Copyshop Printing option, you will also receive your pattern printed on A0 paper in the post. Find out more about our PDF Printing Service here.

So what is a PDF pattern?
A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper. Alternatively you can choose to have the copyshop files printed on large A0 paper, and posted to you at home. If you’re using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm.
