Ultimate Shift Dress Class

Sew Over It Ultimate Shift Dress Sewing Class | part of our Intro to Dressmaking class | learn to sew in London!

Want to learn how to make your own dress? Then the Ultimate Shift Dress class is the perfect course for you!

Extremely versatile, the Ultimate Shift is a staple, everyday dress with three different variations: full sleeves, sleeveless or pretty frill cap sleeves. You can even make it in a top or tunic length. Simple to wear and easy to style, it’s a real wardrobe workhorse!

Your pattern will have every variation so you can mix it up and make as many as you like. Lisa has filled her handmade closet!

On this course you will learn:  to alter your pattern before cutting it out and how to accurately cut your fabric. Learn how to sew darts to create shape in a garment, before you sew up the side seams. Finish the armhole and attach a neckline facing. Hem your dress and sew on a hook and eye to close the dress at the back.

Please note: if you are taking the evening version of this class there may be time to complete the sleeved version of the Ultimate Shift Dress, however this will require homework to be completed between the sessions as there is more sewing to do! In the day version of this class there isn’t time to complete the sleeved version of the Ultimate Shift Dress, you will however go home with a pattern for sleeves and full instructions on how to insert them (after a little more practise!).

You will leave with your finished Ultimate Shift Dress and your own pattern that has been altered to fit you, so you can make the dress again.

Your sewing level

This is a class for a confident beginner. You will need to have taken the Intro to Dressmaking 1 class beforehand or be at the equivalent level.

Tea and cake are provided to help the sewing process along!

Level: 4

  • Have completed Intro to Dressmaking 1 or similar
  • Can insert a regular zip and attach a waistband
  • Understand notches and grainlines
  • Confident in sewing cotton fabrics

Class length: Two 3 hour sessions

Materials required:

You will need to bring some fabric for your Ultimate Shift Dress with you to the class. The amount you need to bring will depend on what size you wear and how wide your fabric is:

Sizes 8-12: 2.75 m of 1.15m wide fabric OR 1.7m of 1.40m wide fabric
Sizes 14-20: 2.75 m of 1.15m wide fabric OR 2.1m of 1.40m wide fabric

If you would like to make the sleeved version of the Ultimate Shift Dress then please bring an extra 0.5m of fabric. Please note that we are unable to teach the sleeved Ultimate Shift Dress in our full day classes, and if you would like to make one in an evening class then there will definitely be homework!

You can use any woven fabric for this dress (ideally lightweight cotton or wool crepe) but remember slippy fabrics are harder to sew!

Pattern sizes: 8-20. If you are outside or may be bordering on this range of sizes, please contact us a week before the class as we will need to grade a pattern especially for you. If it is just one size up or down, we will do this free of charge, but if it is more then there may be a small fee.
